About this Product

The fruit was handpicked, as well as state-of-the-art machine harvested, then carefully sorted at the winery. Traditional methods are used—aging sur lies for 10 months in 20% new French oak to add richness and partial malolactic fermentation to balance the wine’s acidity. Modest use of French oak enhances the wine’s expression of region, while not playing too dominant a role in the overall wine. A large portion of the blend (51%) comes from the historic Stanly Ranch with the balance sourced from vineyards throughout Carneros. A combination of barrel fermentation (60%) and stainless steel tank fermentation (40%) was used with the goal of providing a complex and interesting Chardonnay that maintains a varietal correctness and sense of place.

About Starmont

Starmont Winery and Vineyards is a Napa Valley wine producer based in the Carneros AVA (American Viticultural Area). The estate's wine range is dominated by Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but also includes numerous Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah-based wines. The estate grew out of the Merryvale Family of Wines brand and began with the inaugural release of the Starmont Chardonnay label in 1989. Since, Starmont have expanded and relocated from its original shared facility at St Helena to Stanly Ranch Estate in Carneros. Today, it has a total of 50 hectares (124 acres) of vineyards at this new location and has built an environmentally-friendly winery to accommodate for its increasing wine production. The Starmont winery sits in the heart of the estate and is surrounded by approximately 14ha (35 acres) of Chardonnay, 4ha (9 acres) of Pinot Noir and 2ha (4 acres) of Syrah vineyards, as well as an additional small planting of Viognier.

About California, USA

Responsible for the vast majority of American wine production, if California were a country, it would be the world’s fourth largest wine-producing nation. The state’s diverse terrain and microclimates allow for an incredible range of red wine styles, and unlike tradition-bound Europe, experimentation is more than welcome here.

California wineries range from tiny, family-owned boutiques to massive corporations, and price and production are equally varied. Plenty of inexpensive bulk wine is made in the Central Valley area, while Napa Valley is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious and expensive “cult” wines.

About Chardonnay

Chardonnay is a green-skinned grape variety used to make both still white wine and sparkling wine.

Chardonnay grown in cooler regions exhibits racy, crisp flavours like lemon, lime, and green apple, along with flinty or chalky mineral notes. Warmer locations coax out richer flavours like melon, peach and pineapple. Oak can add notes of vanilla, coconut, and spice, while malolactic fermentation leads to a creamy, buttery texture. Chardonnay is typically a dry wine, although some winemakers allow a touch of residual sugar.
